    Very nice. Recently saw this offered on an online auction site and was curious about it. Happy with the details in this video. One question though... it looks like the Sun is also spinning, which if it is, is a nice feature. I zoomed in, but I was not sure if the movement I noticed was just because of the zoom effect or possibly caused by planets moving around it causing some shadows that gave impression of movement of the Sun orb.

    What a stupid way of presenting information. Folding laundry? Seriously? You didn't answer anything conclusively. Dude, the Curiosity Rover had an extremely short mission duration because of the anticipated dust issues. Selfies taken, showed the panels covered in dust. And then, all-of-a-sudden, we see that the panels have been cleaned and the mission extended $ $ $ How did they clean those panels Mr. Laundry Man?

  • @chrischiesa609

    Or how about allowing the solar panels to rotate on the axis of their arms so that they face downward, say at night or during a dust storm, so as to minimize the amount of time they are facing upward and dust can land on them?

    • @TroyHudson
      @TroyHudson Год назад

      Dust storms aren't the problem - it's slow and largely continuous settling of dust from the atmosphere (which is lofted up by dust storms happening elsewhere on the planet). Adding a gimbal mechanism to the solar arrays would be prohibitively expensive for a project of this scale. Also, the panels are too large to allow them to fully rotate to a vertical orientation anyway (they'd impact the ground - the lander isn't very tall).

    • @unownyoutuber9049
      @unownyoutuber9049 Год назад

      @@TroyHudson would a partial gimble work? were they can sort of just tilt down and let the dust fall off. Or is the dust too fine for this to work?

    • @MutairuW.O
      @MutairuW.O Год назад

      @@unownyoutuber9049 Yes, I learnt Martian dust is very fine, plus they're electrostatic in nature and highly sticky

  • @chrischiesa609
    @chrischiesa609 Год назад

    I don't recall which probe it was that included the drone helicopter. But in that case, would it be possible to hover the drone helicopter over the solar panels, since you're flying it anyway, and use its downblast to blow the dust away?

    • @TroyHudson
      @TroyHudson Год назад

      Well, you *could* do that... but you've seen drone-fail videos right? Yeah, there's always a chance it could go wrong and damage either the helicopter (Ingenuity landed along with the Perseverance rover) or the solar panels. It's too much of a risk to the overall mission.

    You could do what Scott Manley is doing and talk about what's going on in space for the week. Perhaps provide some info that others can't due to your knowledge / background. Like I asked you once why insight didn't just have a broom to remove dust from it's solar panels and you gave a very good answer. You could for example have a video about why JWST doesn't have cameras.

    Really glad you're enjoying the new role, but bummer that you can't talk about the missions, but I understand the reasoning behind that. Quick question for you: InSight's robotic arm was placed on the ground during December and has been there since. Speculation on the forums includes 'soils science' or a 'noise reduction' exercise to reduce noise from the wind passing over the arm shaking the lander, as noise from the lander could be swamping the smaller Marsquake signals from being read by SEIS. Do you have any insight (pardon the pun) on the actual reason? If not, would you care to speculate what you think it could be? We'll get the answer in the PDS, but that will be towards the end of the year. TIA and keep up the good work

Also, I wish you all the success in the world (and beyond this planet) in developing new and exciting missions that help inspire humanity as well as individuals. Thanks for answering this question. It still confuses me why a wiper arm didn't make it. Even if it only works a few times wouldn't that prolong the mission greatly? Wouldn't even have to clean the whole panel just a small section. But like you said static clings and if you say it's not an effective option I'll take your word for it lol

In this case, active cleaning methods need to be investigated. I actually found your video while doing some provisional background research. Subscribed.
